The ideas behind the iDears
Posted on 18 June 2015
The question I get asked most often is "how do you come up with your ideas?".
I never really know how to answer this so I usually mumble something like "ummm they just come to me??". I'm still yet to come up with any sort of decent answer to this question, other than that maybe I'm just a curious, daydreaming, over thinker... who loves puns, obviously!
So since trying to explain my thought processes in general is kinda tricky I thought I'd share some of the stories behind my card designs with you every now and then, or as I like to call them, "the ideas behind the iDears".
I was in the middle of Pakuranga a few years back to pick up a Trade Me purchase. I was completely lost, which is not unusual because I have a terrible sense of direction! I'd printed out a set of directions from Google maps which would have been all good, except for the fact that a lot of the street signs weren't visible. My husband had our GPS in his work van and I was thinking man, I'm so lost without the GPS... and the "Lost without you" card was born.
It's a bit of a tradition in our house for me to make pancakes for the kids birthdays, well "pan-cakes" actually, with candles on top.. cos I can't ever resist a pun. Last year for my eldest boys 4th birthday I was flipping the pancakes and said to him "these are gonna be flippin awesome Reece" ...and then I ran to find some paper to write that down. (yeah, most of my puns work better on a card than in real life...not that it stops me ;) )
This card came about during a conversation with my husband about 4 years ago. It was a freezing winters night and I'd been "suggesting" that he could fill up my hot water bottle for me. He finally did and when he brought it to me I said something along the lines of "thanks Hun, you're such a hottie!" There's two looks Luke does when I run a pun past him.. I either get the frown, head shake combo or the half smile, head shake and eye roll. The second one means it's a winner. I got the second.
